Grand Canyon
Today was supposed to be our big day for exploring the Grand Canyon.
Things started well, we put on extra layers of clothes since we knew it would be cold, and we headed out to the canyon rim to see the sights – and what sights they were. Very spectacular, and with snow on the ground, it looked even better.
We stopped at a couple of vantage points to see the views, took quite a few photos, and enjoyed the majestic canyons.
At lunchtime, we stopped at the shops in the Grand Canyon Village for something to eat, but by the time we had finished, it had started snowing. We thought the snow would ease up enough to still see the sights, but it was obvious by the time we got down the road a little that it was only going to get heavier. We decided to forget trying to get to some of the other view points and headed back in to town … along with 20 – 30 other cars who had obviously decided the same thing – we formed a very long convoy, all travelling at around 20mph on the icy roads.
So we’ve taken the opportunity this afternoon to have a rest, write some postcards and catch up on some reading. It’s actually been good – I definitely needed the break !
It’s a bit disappointing that we haven’t managed to see more of the views – but we’ve seen some of them, we’ve seen lots of snow (one of Leanne’s goals !!), and we’ve enjoyed our stay. We now know it’s definitely worth coming back in warmer weather with more time available to appreciate the area – so we will try and organise a longer stay next time and perhaps do some hiking in the canyon too.
Tomorrow morning we intend to get up early and see if the snow has stopped falling – if it has, we will head back to see some more views for a while before hitting the road to Las Vegas. Hopefully the roads are passable !
