This morning was a bit of a write-off.
I woke up with a screaming headache, almost migrane-like … something I experience from time to time (usually as a result of a combination of overtiredness, dehydration, and pillows that aren’t quite right, causing my neck to seize up, which in turn causes the headaches).
It wasn’t responding to pain killers by mid-morning, so Leanne headed off without me so I could mope around the hotel room, hopefully finding some relief eventually.
She went to the WACA Museum, which apparently was quite good. We can clearly see the WACA from our hotel room too ! Well, we could most of the time – opening up the windows this morning, we were greeted by a solid wall of grey cloud. When it did clear a little, we could see white-caps on the Swan River, and rain that was not so much falling, as streaming past horizontally in the gale-force winds. It didn’t look like a great day to be outdoors.
By the time Leanne got back (around midday), I was feeling quite a bit better, so we got the car and drove out to Hillary’s Boat Harbour and spent the afternoon at AQWA – the Aquarium of Western Australia.
We thought AQWA was very well done – rather than many aquariums which keep all sorts of exotic “interesting” fish, AQWA conentrates solely on marine life found along the costline of WA. Of course, with such a long coastline covering different climate regions, they are fortunate enough to have a very diverse range of marine life, many of which are quite “exotic” in their own right.
Their underwater viewing area in the main aquarium was very good – complete with the ubiquitous conveyor belt, allowing you to just stand in one spot and be transported all the way around. The water was very clear too, making it easy to see the fish, sharks, turtles, rays and other creatures they had there.
We did a bit of research and found that the ray we had seen on Rottnest island a few days ago was actually an Eagle Ray – very distinctive and beautiful creatures.
We got back to the hotel around 5pm and then headed in to town to grab a bite to eat before going to the cinema to see Shrek 2 – very funny movie.
