Our flights have been ticketed.
Flights are a lot more expensive now than when we last did this trip in 2009! Just over $12,000 all up for the entire itinerary this time, while back in 2009 it only cost us around $5,300 in total. Even if we add in a 3rd person to our 2009 costs like we have this time, it only takes the total to around $7,700.
That was a particularly cheap time to be travelling though – I don’t think we really appreciated that at the time, although we paid over $7,500 for 2 return flights just between SYD-SCL back in early 2008 when we went backpacking in Patagonia! I felt a bit better about the cost of our flights this trip when I compare to 2008 rather than 2009!
Hopefully we’ll make some of the cost up elsewhere on the exchange rates – we were paying around US$0.75 back in 2009, and we’re also about 20% up on the COP (Colombian Peso) as well … so we should be a bit better off on accommodation and such – hopefully their rates haven’t gone up too much in that time.
We did the last bit of shopping we needed tonight – a roll-on bag for Andres. Turns out the cheapest and most convenient option was the roll-on version of the backpack he already has, so now he has a matching luggage set!
So we are now only one step away from being officially ready to travel – I made an appointment with the Colombian Consulate for tomorrow to submit our visa applications.
