I’ve had trouble for a couple of years finding comfortable underpants. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been buying Holeproof Underdaks Hipsters – they were the only underpants that were comfortable enough for me. I have many pairs of other brands sitting in my drawer that I’ve bought over the years to try and find something better – but they never get worn: none of them have ever come close to replacing the Holeproofs. But even then, I haven’t been that happy with them – they are still a little restricting and can get uncomfortable when sitting for long periods of time (like on airplanes).
I’ve never found boxer shorts that were comfortable – usually the elastic around the waist was not tight enough to hold them up, or if it was, the legs and body were too tight. Non-stretchable fabrics are very difficult to get a good fit in, so most cotton boxers were out of the question. I did find some boxer shorts that were stretchy and pretty comfortable in Target – I bought a few pairs and they have been quite good … but for one fatal problem – they have a seam running up the rear of them which leads to them continually riding up and becoming very uncomfortable (have to learn how to extract them discretely when in public!).
For our upcoming trip to South America – I was looking for something lightweight and quick drying so that I could potentially wash them in the sink and have them dry overnight. In my research I came across numerous recommendations for ExOfficio Boxer Shorts. What’s more I discovered that Paddy Pallin here in Australia stock them and that they even have sizing that should fit me.
I bought a pair on one of our trips into town ($40 – ouch!), and they were brilliant! No seam up the rear of the pants means that they don’t ride up – nice and loose fit, so they are very comfortable, while the elastic waist is just about right for holding them up. Actually the first pair I bought were a tad large, so I went back and bought a second pair the next size down and they are spot on. After flying back to Adelaide with them, I have confirmed that they are extremely comfortable for several hours sitting down on an airplane too … so I’m completely converted. I’ve started wearing them for every day use. I’ll get a couple more for our trip away and they should keep me going.
