I’ve migrated to the “official” replacement for b2 called WordPress – so far so good, but given that I had already completed migration to b2Evolution (an alternative branch of the b2 code) – I had to regress my installation to a backed up version of b2 before upgrading to WordPress and then manually adding in the entries I had made since moving to b2evo.
PaulZag emailed me about my changes and asked:
Did you look at WordPress (http://wordpress.org) the new official branch of b2?
My response:
Gee – thanks for not telling me earlier ! :P
I spent quite some time looking for alternatives to b2 – it just didn’t do everything I wanted to in the way I wanted it done.
I never came across WordPress in my search – then again there is so much crap out there (half written blog engines) it’s hard to recognise the good stuff amongst it all.
These guys (WordPress) seem like they know what they are doing – heck, they selected “Smarty” as their php templating engine, which is the “smartest” thing they could do in my opinion – people who know about this stuff all recommend smarty to me.
Except I’ve already migrated my database format away from b2 – and I’m not sure it’s going to be easy to go back *sigh*.
It actually may be quicker for me to reload all the blog entries by hand. *SIGH*.
Oh well – I was about to spend the next couple of hours tonight further hacking my b2evo template – but I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t like the way the b2evo guy does things – his proprietary skins are just too yuck. I like standards. I like simplicity.
Pity I didn’t come to this conclusion before I decided to trash my b2 blog database. **S I G H**
So I’m going to try WordPress now.
